Brooklyn Pie Bake Supports Neighbors Together

The 4th Annual Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit supports Neighbors Together.  Neighbors Together has been serving the communities of Ocean-Hill, Brownsville, and Bed Stuy for over 30 years, acting as a community center and soup kitchen.

Right now you can help Neighbors Together get back to full capacity after hurricane Sandy.  One of their main refrigerator/freezer malfunctioned during the storm.  Having working refrigeration is crucial for insuring healthy and safe food for the community.

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit that will take place on Sunday, November 13th, from 1:00 to 4:00pm at SPACECRAFT in Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit is a yearly Brooklyn based pie bake-off that raises money for local underfunded non-profits.

There are only two rules for the Annual Pie Bake-Off Benefit.  Rule One is that all pie crust must be homemade.  Rule Two is that at least one ingredient must be local(our “local” is defined as being grown or produced within a 200 mile radius of Brooklyn).

To wash down each slice we will have beer from Brooklyn Brewery.  For eating on, Susty Party has provided sustainable flatware.

Entry to the event is $10 and includes 1 free drink and three pie slice tickets.  Additional drinks are $3.  Bakers receive FREE admission.  Bakers are required to bring two(2) pies to ensure that there is enough to go around.  If you would like to compete, please RSVP by Friday, November 11th, with your name, pie, and local ingredient to:

This years judges don’t mess around when it comes to pie:

Kelly Carámbula is a graphic designer by day—and a maker, baker, and blogger by night. You can check out her food adventures on her blog, eat make read, have a little happy hour with her on Serious Eats, or remember the good old days with her food magazine, Remedy Quarterly.

Don’t let his svelte figure fool you; from the time he was in High School working at a small bakery in Harlem, Tim Wersan has quietly (some might say, “gluttonously”) developed a palate for the subtleties of baked viands, with a proclivity for fresh baked pie. This year he brought home the win at Greenmarket’s blueberry pie eating contest in Union Square all while on break from managing Windfall Farms, producer of New York’s most sought after produce.

Tess Igarta, contemporary dancer, educator, and honorary mention recipient in last years Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit, loves pie, especially cold and a few days old.  The fancier the top crust, the better it tastes…

Judging will be based upon taste, texture, and appearance, and the catagories are: Best Overall.  Best Sweet.  Best Savory. Crowd Favorite.  Winners receive a canvas bag filled with filled with a copy of Remedy Quarterly, Martha Stewart’s New Pies and Tarts(Random House) provided by The Recipe Club and Clarkson Potter/Publishers, Green Kitchen(Random House) by Alice Waters provided by The Recipe Club and Clarkson Potter/Publishers, and a special hand made prize ribbon …  Best Overall gets the canvas bag with all that, a$50 gift certificate to Whisk, plus a pie feature on Etsy’s Blog and The Recipe Club.

This year we are giving proceeds to DontFlushMe.  DontFlushMe was created to allow NYC residents to help reduce the amount of pollution in the harbor. Some 27 billion gallons of raw sewage is dumped into the harbor every year. This is the largest source of water pollution in New York. This comes from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) that open when the sewer system is overloaded. The idea is to enable residents to understand when the overflows happen and reduce their wastewater production before and during an overflow event.    Custom sensors will be created and placed in key CSO locations throughout the city. The information collected will be available via a wide ranging alert network.

The event is Sunday, November 13th, from 1 to 4pm. The event will take place at SPACECRAFT(355 Bedford Ave) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
