Greenpoint Gazette

The wonderful Talisa Chang has written about the 1st Annual Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit in the Greenpoint Gazette.

Pie dreams were realized at Spacecraft last Sunday at the 1st Annual Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit—both for the twenty-eight hopeful bakers and the over one hundred attendants, who helped raise over $1000 for Bags for the People and left with happy, pie-filled stomachs.

Nov 11

Welcome to the 1st Annual Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit that will take place on Sunday, November 22, from 1:30 to 4:30pm at SPACECRAFT in Brooklyn.

There are only two rules for the Brooklyn Annual Pie Festival.  Rule One is that all pie crust must be homemade.  Rule Two is that at least one ingredient must be local(our “local” is defined as being grown or produced within a 200 mile radius of Brooklyn).

To wash down each slice we will have milk, tea, Coffee, wine, and beer by Brooklyn Brews Matt Miller.  Also, to compliment the assortment of pies, we will be serving ice cream.

Entry to the event is $10 and includes free drinks, ice cream, and two pie slice tickets.

Bakers gain free admission with pie.  Although only one pie is required to compete, two are recommended and can increase chances of winning the popular vote.  All entries, along with an ingredients list (for allergy concerns) must be submitted by November 21st.  To enter email your name and pie to brooklynpiebake@gmail.com. Be sure to point out your local ingredient!

Our judges are heavily involved within the New York food and craft worlds including Heather Ross, author of Weekend Sewing, Tracy Candido of Sweet Tooth of the Tiger, Julie Schneider, director of Etsy Labs, Chysanthe Tenentes of Brooklyn Based, and Tara Laruffa, Marketing Director of the Union Square Greenmarket.

Judging will be based upon taste, texture, and appearance, and the catagories are: Best Overall.  Best Sweet.  Best Savory. Crowd Favorite.  Winners receive a Bags for the People bag filled with prizes: a copy of the best-selling Baked cookbook (Stewart, Tabori and Chang), a copy of the best-selling Weekend Sewing book (which also features recipes!), upcycled “pie badges” from Dear Drunk Girl…  Best Overall gets Bags for the People bag with all that, plus a pie feature on Etsy.

A portion of the proceeds from The Brooklyn Annual Pie Festival will go to support Brooklyn based non-profit, Bags for the People.  Bags for the People is a non-profit organization that provides a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. They use all repurposed materials and give their bags out for FREE. Bags for the People also performs community building workshops and events to not only get people to make the switch from plastic to re-usable, but to inspire people to take an active and creative role in life.
